GREGOR PIATIGORSKY - Great Cellists PIATIGORSKY
Produktbeskrivelse
A comprehensive survey of the art of Gregor Piatigorsky, the outstanding representative of the Russian cello school in the generation before Rostropovich, from the 1930s to the 1950s. Hailed by Rubinstein as `certainly the best cellist I had heard since Casals´, Piatigorsky performed all around the world, but was less frequently recorded than might be expected, as violinists typically outsold cellists, then as now! The Schumann Concerto was his only pre-war recording, with the LPO under Barbirolli. The rest of the disc offers the superior sound quality of post-war recording and offers a very generous cornucopia of Piatigorsgky Cello Encores as well as the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No 1. Excellent value at 78 minutes length.
